Hida-zome (Hida Dyeing)

It is said that the style of Hida Dyeing came from Kyoto during the late Edo Period, about 200 years ago. A peculiarity of this region, pigments are mixed with soya water before the dyeing process begins. Material dyed during the winter months are laid out in the cold so that the colors may stay fast and remain bright. Material dyed using the Hida-zome method are used in the making of costumes for the Lion Dance (Shishi-mai) and the Cock-fight Dance (Kankakokan) during the Spring Takayama Festival (also known as the Sanno Festival).
