This is part of the Tozan (Eastern Mountain) Road, the main road which joined the town of Kokufu and the central government during the Ritsuryo Period (7th~8th century). At present it is called the Kuraiyama Trail and covers the road spanning from Ichinomiya in Takayama to Yamanoguchi in Hagiwara via the Kariyasu pass and Kuraiyama Pass.
