「The Tyger」

Tyger! Tyger! buring bright

「tiger」でなく「tyger」と用いている。ただの虎ではなく虎を越えた存在として並外れた動物を示す。

獣は情熱の象徴として使われており人間の原動力となるエネルギーである怒りを虎としてとらえさせる。

In the forests of night,

　「forest」暗い森は抑圧の象徴。“夜の森”と“虎の輝き”を対比させている。

What immortal hand or eye “m”の音の呼応

Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

　頭韻　　　　　「fearful」恐ろしい均衡＝虎 を通して 神が見えてくる。

In what distant deeps or skies

Burnt the fire of thine eyes?

On what wings dare he aspire?

What the hand dare sieze the fire?

And what shoulder, & what art,

	心臓の工作 恐ろしいもの(神)が恐ろしいもの(虎)を創った。 神は創造者として捉える。

Could twist the sinews of thy heart?

And when thy heart began to beat,

What dread hand? & what dread feet?

「虎」が命に関わる生命を奪うほどの存在となっている

天地創造

謎めいた情景でかかれている

（創造に満足して微笑したのか、

虎を創造してしまったことにあきれ苦笑したのか？）

Did he who made the Lamb make thee?

　神は自身でも予想できなかったものを創造してしまった。「虎」＝「天地」。

信頼から虎を作った神への不信感に変わった。恐れを“could”から“dear”の変化で現している。

虎(恐ろしい)　⇔　仔羊(優しい)　この二つを対象比較している。

　第一連は穏やかな“could”を用い第６連は“dear”として力の重みを持たせた。

“could”は創ることが出来た　⇔　“dear”は敢えて創造したという意味を持つ。

　虎の創造過程　：　眼→心臓→頭脳→足　：　直感→感情→理性→官能

　創造主→神＝仔羊＝子供＝キリスト

　　　　　　　　　　　　　平和主義者のキリスト→仔羊

　　　　　　　　　　　　　戦うキリスト→虎

前半４連は速いテンポで「驚異」を表現している。残りの２連は緩やかなテンポで「畏怖」を表す。

各連が４行でなっており２４行あるうちの１４行が疑問形で表現されている。
